It’s been a banner year for Champion Hills Country Club, the residential community considered to be the home golf course of famed architect Tom Fazio.
While celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2018, Champion Hills was recently honored with the designation as one of the nation’s “Top 100 Planned Communities” and a “Best Mountain Views” community by ideal-LIVING magazine.
Fazio designed the course shortly after moving to Henderson County to raise his family in the late 1980s.
The par-71 course opened to rave reviews in 1991 and has been ranked in Golf Digest as one of the top private courses in North Carolina and the country.
“Champion Hills is honored to receive this recognition from ideal-LIVING magazine", said Champion Hills general manager Dana Schultz. “Our residents and members have known for years that Champion Hills is a special place. These awards put Champion Hills on a national stage with other fine communities around the country.”
At an elevation of 3,000 feet and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Champion Hills is much more than a championship golf course.
The 25,000-square foot clubhouse offers several dining options; there is a new fitness center, tennis courts, a heated pool, hydro spa and sun deck, Bocce ball courts and 18 miles of walking trails.
“The Best of the Best” feature honors those areas and communities which deserve special recognition for their outstanding qualities, facilities and programs,” said Kelly Godbey, ideal-LIVING’s editor and associate publisher.

This creation of Fazio, long considered America’s top living architect, who still maintains a home and office in Hendersonville, began with 524 wooded acres more than 30 years ago. Now the 730-acre property includes 477 homesites and 290 members.
The Champion Hills community has long been supportive of WNC, working with non-profits like the Boys and Girls Club of Hendeson County, Blue Ridge Humane Society and Brevard Music Center.
Four years ago the Boys and Girls Club inducted Champion Hills into the Founders Circle Hall of Fame for its generosity.
The club has helped raise more than $1.5 million for the Boys & Girls Club at their annual Fazio Invitational Golf Tournament.
Last year, Champion Hills received Brevard Music Center’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of more than 20 years of providing support to BMC’s Annual Scholarship Fund through the Champion Hills Gala.
Members took over ownership of the club from developers in 2000, and since then Champion Hills has grown dramatically.
Three years after the development began in 1988, the golf course opened.
“Because of the members’ ongoing support, the club will continue to be what it is today,” said board president Randy Raup. ”(That’s) a thriving and active membership and a proud participant in the growth and prosperity of its local community.”
Champion Hills is managed by Troon Prive, the private club operating division of Troon, the world’s largest golf management company. Troon serves more than 300 locations worldwide, including 280 golf courses.
