Celebrating 30 Years at Champion Hills

Champion Hills will celebrate its 30 anniversary this year and as with all major milestones, we couldn’t help but look back on all of the hard work and dedication of so many who transformed Champion Hills into the club and community that our members and residents enjoy today.

Our story begins in 1987 with a local real estate salesman who identified the need of an additional private golf club in the Hendersonville area. He then shared his idea with the head golf professional at his club and shortly after, the pair found 524 acres that would later become the site of their newly formed shared vision.

By February 1988, the pair had become a group, adding more investors and inviting renowned golf course designer, Tom Fazio, to design the golf course. By the end of the month, the group had acquired two parcels of land, including the original 524 acres, and the formation of Champion Hills was formally announced.

The construction of Fazio’s mountain masterpiece began in August of 1989 and was completed in four phases over the course of two years. Fazio’s design was guided by the natural curvature of the land. Each fairway was sculpted inside its own valley, with ample space for homes to be tucked discreetly into the woods along the hillsides.

By 1994, the first homes in Champion Hills had been constructed across from what is now the fitness center, our course was celebrating its third birthday, and we had just completed construction of our beautiful clubhouse. Even with so much to be proud of, we were not ready to rest on our laurels, and so the next two years saw enhancements to the golf course irrigation and drainage systems, along with the transition of the fairways from bluegrass to bentgrass.

Arguably the most significant transformation in the history of Champion Hills was not the original 524 acres into what we know today, but the transition of Champion Hills from privately owned to member-owned in December of 2000. This transition allowed our members and residents the ability to help mold the future of Champion Hills through our Club and Property Owners Association.

Our association has overseen the implementation of several improvements including the 2011 renovation of our clubhouse to include the Fazio Grill Room along with significantly expanding our pool/fitness/real estate facility.

In 2016, we redesigned our driving range hitting area, and by 2017, we created an Event Lawn with stunning mountain views, and have expanded and updated our fitness facility.

What began as 524 undeveloped acres in the quaint mountain community of Hendersonville, North Carolina has grown to 730 acres encompassing 477 homesites and 290 Golf, Social, and National Members.
We are confident in the vision of our Club and Property Owners Association for the future of Champion Hills and we are excited to welcome even more members and residents as we continue to write our history, one day at a time.
